In 1964 contributions were received for a scholarship fund to honor the memory of Dr. Jay Swanson, a long-time faculty member and former student in the Department of Agriculture, who died unexpectedly in December 1963. Funds were contributed by Margaret Swanson and friends of Jay, but without solicitation, in accord with family wishes. A permanent memorial fund was established in 1966 to provide scholarships for students majoring in agricultural economics. In order to build on the initial fund and make the program self-sustaining, contributions were solicited from Ag Econ alums and friends.
In 1967, after the untimely death of Dr. E. J. Working, Department Chair from 1954 to 1965, substantial contributions to the Agricultural Economics Memorial Scholarship Fund were received from the E.J. Working family and friends of the Workings.
Award Requirements
Students majoring in agricultural economics at Washington State University are eligible to apply for the Agricultural Economics Memorial Scholarship if they plan to return for the following fall semester. A student will be selected and awarded each year on the basis of scholarship, leadership, and need.
