This scholarship fund was established in memory of Professor Edwin G. Schafer. Professor Schafer taught at Washington State University from 1913 until his retirement in 1951. He headed the Department of Agronomy for many years and was Assistant Dean of Agriculture when he retired.
Professor Schafer was a pioneer in hybrid corn investigation from 1910-1913 at Kansas State University prior to coming to WSU. At WSU he was the first Head of the Department of Farm Crops within the College of Agriculture in 1917. He subsequently became Head of the Department of Agronomy with the consolidation of Farm Crops and Soils in 1928. He was a specialist in wheat production and mainly studied the effects of crop rotation on crop production. Mr. Schafer was instrumental in organizing the original groups which later evolved into the present wheat growers, crop improvement and turf associations. He was particularly held in high esteem by several generations of students who studied in his beginning course in field crops, taught each semester for one-third of a century.
Professor Schafer died in July, 1976 at the age of 92, one of WSU’s pioneers and long-time faculty member.
Award Requirements
Those considered eligible for scholarships hereunder shall be full time, regularly enrolled students in the College of Agriculture.
