Claude Cleveland Richman was born August 1885 in Dixie, Washington. His family moved to the Horse Heaven Hills area near Prosser, Washington in 1900. There, Claude learned the blacksmithing trade from his father and worked in the family’s threshing operation. Lucy (Rubens) Richman was born October 1892 in Carney, Michigan. Her family came west by wagon train when she was one year old. They settled in the Willamette Valley in Oregon. While visiting her sisters and families who were farming on Horse Heaven, she met Claude Richman. They were married one year later, April 26, 1913. After homesteading in Southern Oregon for seven years, Claude and Lucy returned to the Horse Heaven area which became their home and life’s work. True pioneers, they acquired 3,800 acres of pasture and farmland, much of which had to have the sagebrush grubbed off. Claude Richman passed away July 1960. Lucy Richman passed away January 1973. This scholarship is a living testament to the spirit and lives of Claude and Lucy Richman. It is established in loving memory by their family: Helen (Richman) and Robert Prenguber, and their children, Thomas, Bruce and Betty Prenguber. The Prengubers are all graduates of Washington State University. In memory of Helen Prenguber, who passed away on April 12, 2009, and at the suggestion of their children, Robert and Helen Prenguber’s names were added to the name of this fund in their honor.
Award Requirements
The distributions from this fund shall be used for a junior or senior undergraduate student in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. Preference should be given to students with financial need. One Scholarship will be awarded per year.
