Leaving his oceanfront hometown of Nahant, Massachusetts in 1948 at the age of 17, Jim became a Cougar. He graduated in 1952 with a BA in Speech and a commission as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He served on active duty for two years, was later recalled in the Pueblo crisis, then subsequently served as a reservist. He retired in 1982 as a colonel.
Carolyn Leonard Hathaway’s hometown was Yakima, Washington. She attended WSC (now WSU) in the footsteps of her father and two older siblings. Interior Design was her major, graduating in 1956. Jim and Carolyn were married in 1957.
Starting in 1956, Jim became a banker in western Washington. After a thirty-three year career he retired as vice president in 1992.
Both volunteered in several community and charitable organization including the Rotary Club of the University District of Seattle, Jim having been a Rotary District Governor in 1998-1999.
Award requirements
This fund shall be used to provide one or more undergraduate or graduate student scholarships in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. Preference shall be given to students studying plant sciences and/or food science.
