Create a News Release

Use the form below to create a news release in the correct format for your event or accomplishment. Our team will review the release, make necessary edits, and send it out to the appropriate distribution list(s). If we have questions, or if we need to make substantial edits, we will call you to discuss the release before issuing it.

  • Headline:

The headline should communicate the key message of the press release. Examples:

    • Health consortium receives funds for teaching health center
    • WSU introduces first student-made wine label
    • Researchers uncover secrets of destructive plant virus
  • Format city in ALLCAPS. For example: PULLMAN, Wash.
  • Introductory paragraph (100 Words Max)

The introductory paragraph should communicate what’s happening, the date, time, where it happens, and the important people or organization involved.

  • The introductory paragraph should communicate what’s happening, the date, time, where it happens, and the important people or organization involved.
  • Including a good quote from a researcher, student, or administrator or other source can bring the human element to the press release, as well as being a means to communicate details and story elements.
  • Use the subsequent paragraphs to fill in the details of the story. For example, explain the importance of the event and why it’s taking place. It is best to use the inverted pyramid structure for press releases with the most important (newsworthy) information at the top and the least important nearer the end. This is a good place to provide detail about the participants, who stands to benefit, who stands to lose, etc.
  • The final paragraph should contain the call to action. Provide a link that leads to more information, to a registration page or video content. The last paragraph is sometimes used to include boilerplate information about the organization, company, or institution issuing the press release.
