Heathman Brothers’ Endowed Scholarship

Richard W. “Dick” Heathman was born in England in 1868 and came to America with his parents in 1871. At age twenty he settled on his own near Hartline and in 1890 he homesteaded on land which became the permanent Heathman farm. Dick was an eternal optimist, believing that given proper husbandry, the land would provide, and it did. His philosophy and his faith in the land led to expansion of the farm, and eventually all four of his sons had their own farm. Sons Lloyd, Elvin and Carl all enrolled at WSC (WSU) but Carl soon transferred to UW. Elvin earned a degree in mechanical engineering and chose to put his expertise to work in Florida, letting his brothers farm his land. Son Earl graduated from Eastern Washington Normal in Cheney, taught school for several years, and then became a full-time wheat and cattle rancher. Dick was active in all aspects of community affairs and agriculture and became one of the first county commissioners of Grant County. The four Heathman brothers became successful and prosperous in their chosen work; Carl, Lloyd, and Earl in farming and cattle ranching, and Elvin as an engineer and later as a poultry rancher. To honor the four brothers and their father in a way that would have pleased them all – a Heathman Brothers’ Endowed Scholarship was created through Washington State University.
