C. James “Jim” Quann and Barbara “Barb” Heathman Quann both graduated from Hartline High School and then from Washington State College in 1954. They have three grown children (their son Marty died of a heart condition in 1976), and six grandchildren. Son James was WSU ‘79 (Business), son Michael WSU ‘80 (Agricultural Economics), and daughter Maria WSU ‘84 (Business). Jim taught higher education for over forty-three years, with faculty and administrative positions at four universities. He holds the titles of WSU Registrar Emeritus and Coordinator, Veterans’ Research. He served for more than 25 years as University Registrar at Washington State. Jim is a Korean veteran and founder of the WSU Veterans Memorial, which honors all WSU veterans. He also spearheaded the creation and financing of the St. Thomas More religious center and chapel. Jim retired from WSU in 1996. His research project culminated in 2005 with publication of his book, WSU Military Veterans: Heroes and Legends. He is the author of four books and over 60 articles published in professional journals. From WSU, Jim earned a B.S. in Animal Sciences, a Master’s in Agricultural Economics, and a Doctor of Education. He received the Distinguished Service Award, the WSU Alumni Achievement Award, and is part of the CAHNRS Alumni Wall of Honor. A year after graduating from WSC with a B.A. in Business, Barbara Heathman married Jim and joined him in university work. Barb was a stay-at-home mother of four until all were in school; she then joined the WSU staff and worked part-time in several departments. Her greatest memories are assisting Dr. Herb Eastlick in the Predmedical/Predental program, Rod Commons in Sports Information, and serving in Holland Library as an accountant. She was also very active in civic affairs, serving as an officer in PTAs, as President of the Ellensburg Hospital Guild, President of WSU Faculty Women’s Club, President of Pullman Civic Newcomers, and as an officer in the American Association of University Women. She also served for many years as advisor to the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority and was active in multiple Pullman Junior Miss pageants. Both Jim and Barb have passed, but their legacy goes on.
Award Requirements
The distributions from this fund shall be used to award one or more scholarships to low-income students majoring in any field of agriculture or home economics within the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences at Washington State University.
