Manning, Patricia Ann Britten Memorial Scholarship

Patricia was born October 1940 in Mount Vernon. She graduated from Snohomish High School in 1958 and enrolled at Washington State University that fall, majoring in dairy science. During her high school years, Pat developed a small herd of Holstein dairy cattle in conjunction with her 4-H club activities. These cattle were maintained on nearby farms through the generosity of several area dairy farmers and the sale of these cattle helped finance Pat’s education at WSU. At this time, she also developed an interest in horses through her 4-H projects. When she was a junior and senior she worked during the school year in the Department of Dairy Science while continuing her studies part-time. She received her B.S. degree in dairy science in 1965. While at Washington State University, Dr. Ralph Erb encouraged Pat to participate on a judging team at the National Dairy Judging Contest. Dr. Erb’s laboratory technician, Bruce Manning graduated from Rutgers University in 1957. He was in the United States Army for two years and then went to work on a registered guernsey farm in New Jersey.  The owner purchased some guernseys from a farm in Snohomish- a farm very near Patricia’s childhood home. Patricia was a laboratory technician at Washington State University for twenty two years, and loved “being a Cougar”. She worked fist in the animal sciences department in dairy products manufacturing and then in food science in enology. She enjoyed breeding and raising Arabian horses and belonged to various state horse organizations. A neurological disorder let to her retirement from Washington State University in 1982, and she died due to complications from a home accident on July 2, 1986 at the age of 45.
