Simon M. Reinbold was born August 19, 1899 in the Egypt Country in Lincoln County, Washington. His parents settled in the Egypt Country near Fort Spokane after coming to the U.S. from Germany in the 1880’s. He was the seventh of 12 children. He bought a farm in 1939 and was one of the first farmers in Lincoln County to use conservation practices. He filled in deep ditches on the rolling land and grassed the draws. He was an early user of fertilizer on the crop land on advice from Harley Jacquot. The same ground was seeded 6 years in a row with the fertilization techniques recommended. The increased yields enabled him to pay for the farm very quickly. Simon was among the first to plow the stubble under to conserve the soil, instead of burning the stubble as was the common practice then. Simon served as a District Commissioner for the Lincoln County Fire Protection District for 32 years and a member of the Washington State Grange Association for over 50 years.
Marvel J. Reinbold was born July 9, 1904 in Inavale, Nebraska. She was the oldest of 3 children. Her parents farmed in Nebraska and then homesteaded land in Wyoming. They later moved to Alberta, Canada. She came to Spokane, Washington in the 1930’s. She and Simon were married in 1953. She has two children by a previous marriage, and she and Simon have two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Marvel was a member of Country Homes, Lincoln County Extension Homemakers Club. She was also a member of the WA Fire Commissioners Auxiliary from 1953 to 1977, serving as their president in 1973. She was an active member of the Spokane Garry Chapter of the D.A.R. for a number of years, serving on many committees and as president. Her favorite hobbies were flower gardening and sewing. Both Simon and Marvel were avid world travelers.
Award requirements
Scholarship funds shall be awarded to students majoring in agronomy and soils or human nutrition and dietetics. First preference shall be given to students from Lincoln County, WA. The scholarship may be used to recruit high school students.
