Our History

The College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) at Washington State University is an expansive and diverse college that includes 16 academic units, 4 research and extension centers distributed across the state, 13 subject matter centers, and 39 county and tribal extension offices. CAHNRS fosters disciplines that serve at the interface of scientific discovery and its application to the advancement of society and improvement of the human experience.

In the fall of 2012, CAHNRS created a National Board of Advisors (NBOA) comprised of 100 industry representatives and stakeholders, including many alumni from every program within the college. The goal of establishing the NBOA was to enroll external advisors into partnering with CAHNRS personnel to create innovative academic, extension and research programs that served the needs of their industries. NBOA is now SEAC, the Student Experience Advisory Council, and the continued intention is to co-create new initiatives with industry input understanding that relevance is a key to success in fulfilling the land grant mission of this university, and the best portal for accessing relevance is through our industry partners.

SEAC is focused on beyond the book experiences that will allow students to translate what they learn in the classroom to industry related activities. Through these efforts, alumni and industry partners can fulfill their need for access to high quality leadership and skill development in their workplace. Ultimately, the Center for Transformational Learning and Leadership (CTLL) was developed out of this collaboration, and the vision for the center continues to grow, serving CAHNRS, WSU, the region and the world.

Timeline of from fall 2012 through 2017

Fall 2012 CAHNRS creates National Board of Advisors (NBOA), partnering with external advisors to create innovative academic, extension and research programs that serve industry needs. The NBOA provides life-skill enhancement and professional development opportunities as part of the academic experience.

Spring 2013 Center for Transformational Learning and Leadership (CTLL) introduced. The CTLL provides resources for the total educational experience through three domains: Foundation, Integration, and Translation.

Spring 2014 CTLL is approved as an official WSU Center. The CTLL serves as a gateway for students, faculty, alumni and industry partners to engage in high quality, holistic learning and effective leadership development.

Fall 2015 NBOA branches into two committees to improve focus: the Food and Agriculture Advisory Council (FAAC) and the Student Experience Advisory Committee (SEAC). These committees are intended to support student experiences affiliated with the CTLL.

Fall 2016 Dr. Denise Yost introduced as Director of the CTLL; CTLL transitions to the Department of Human Development. WSU will become the national leader in immersion-based student experiences and will generate the assessment data to demonstrate that these efforts significantly improve career and life readiness and support people in living into their potential.

Spring 2017 Caitlin Bletscher added to the CTLL as Clinical Assistant Professor. Bringing her commitment to the CTLL, Bletscher is dedicated to assisting disadvantaged populations in developing their leadership capacity.


About the CTLL

The CTLL provides exceptional learning and leadership experiences that build essential success skills in three areas: foundation, integration and translation.

Foundation: Discipline-based skills in the career interest area. Foundation components include course work, academic advising, tutoring, mentoring, and access to seminars, discussions, debates and other opportunities to acquire content knowledge in a chosen discipline.

Integration: Interpersonal communication skills required to effectively engage and work successfully with people. Integration activities include: life skill enhancement courses, capstone courses, service learning and team building experiences, student professional development workshops, as well as life skill enhancement and professional development opportunities for faculty, staff, alumni and industry partners.

Translation: Opportunities to work with industry partners to apply learning to actual work scenarios as part of a high quality training experience. Translation involves participation in industry internships, international immersion experiences, job shadowing, industry site visits, panel discussions, peer and professional mentoring, and mock interviews.
