{"id":10822,"date":"2018-05-12T16:16:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-12T23:16:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cahnrs.wsu.edu\/ctll\/?p=10822"},"modified":"2023-10-03T11:12:50","modified_gmt":"2023-10-03T18:12:50","slug":"former-wsu-cahnrs-student-conserves-thousands-internship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cahnrs.wsu.edu\/ctll\/2018\/05\/12\/former-wsu-cahnrs-student-conserves-thousands-internship\/","title":{"rendered":"Former WSU CAHNRS student conserves thousands through internship"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After her brother became sick from a food contamination, Noelle Diciglio developed a passion for food safety, eventually saving $400,000 in conservation efforts during her <a href=\"http:\/\/jobs.ecolab.com\/job-search-results\/?keyword=Summer%20Intern&amp;fuzzy=false\">summer internship<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though she originally studied <a href=\"https:\/\/cas.vancouver.wsu.edu\/biology\/academics\">biology<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vancouver.wsu.edu\/\">WSU Vancouver<\/a>, her brother&#8217;s sickness led her to transfer to <a href=\"https:\/\/wsu.edu\/\">WSU Pullman<\/a> to study food science where she soon found out about an <a href=\"http:\/\/jobs.ecolab.com\/job-search-results\/?keyword=Summer%20Intern&amp;fuzzy=false\">internship<\/a> opportunity at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolab.com\/\">Ecolab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I researched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolab.com\/\">Ecolab<\/a>\u2019s mission and found the companies values aligned with my own,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It was a perfect match for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to their site, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolab.com\/\">Ecolab<\/a> focuses on water, hygiene and energy technologies and services to help businesses keep their environment clean, safe and operating efficiently while achieving sustainability goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diciglio said many companies are shorthanded when it comes to conservation efforts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolab.com\/\">Ecolab<\/a> steps in to find new ways to conserve either water, energy or time to best suit the company&#8217;s needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is easy for companies to become complacent with how it has always been done,\u201d she said. &#8220;They don&#8217;t realize and often they do not have time to consider better solutions that could optimize their operations.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the thousands of dollars she saved for companies as an <a href=\"http:\/\/jobs.ecolab.com\/job-search-results\/?keyword=Summer%20Intern&amp;fuzzy=false\">intern<\/a>, she discovered just how quickly she could make a positive impact and soon was able to transfer that to a full-time position as an <a href=\"http:\/\/jobs.ecolab.com\/job-search-results\/?keyword=Account%20Manager&amp;fuzzy=false\">account manager<\/a> by the end of the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-10824\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/39\/20170921_162228-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"noelle-diciglio\" class=\"wp-image-10824\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/39\/20170921_162228-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/39\/20170921_162228-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/39\/20170921_162228-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/39\/20170921_162228-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/wpcdn.web.wsu.edu\/cahnrs\/uploads\/sites\/39\/20170921_162228-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Diciglio (right) and her colleague, Ron Hall, at the Washington Association for Food Protection Conference in 2017. <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;They offered me experience I knew would be very valuable,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What surprised her the most was how applicable her <a href=\"http:\/\/sfs.wsu.edu\/\">food science courses<\/a> were, especially microbiology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the summer of 2018, she will work with <a href=\"https:\/\/cahnrs.wsu.edu\/\">CAHNRS<\/a> students who take those same courses to find new ways to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecolab.com\/\">Ecolab<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are looking for students going into their junior year with an <a href=\"https:\/\/admission.wsu.edu\/academics\/fos\/Public\/area.castle?id=7762\">agriculture<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/sfs.wsu.edu\/\">food science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ansci.wsu.edu\/\">animal science<\/a> major or something similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are also looking for someone who has a flexible schedule and is a problem-solver. She said social skills to communicate effectively with customers and housing nearby one of their locations is a plus, but at the end of the day, they are looking for someone who is genuinely passionate about food safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to understand that people&#8217;s lives are at risk,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a big responsibility and we need people who understand that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jobs.ecolab.com\/job-search-results\/?keyword=Summer%20Intern&amp;fuzzy=false\">Interns<\/a> will compete for positions at the end of the summer through presentations of their efforts to the leadership in St. Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Katie Shadler, PR Specialist<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After her brother became sick from a food contamination, Noelle Diciglio developed a passion for food safety, eventually saving $400,000 in conservation efforts during her summer internship.
