Small Gifts. Big Difference.<\/h2>\n

Fund fuels student passions<\/h3>\n

The Dean\u2019s Excellence Fund translates small gifts into big differences. Created by many donations over several years, the fund supports students who show passion for education and a desire to help others, all in the face of out-of-the-ordinary challenges.<\/p>\n

Each year, CAHNRS academic departments nominate students for the award and the Dean chooses two recipients: one undergraduate and one graduate student.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Breaking down barriers<\/h3>\n

\"KhyberGrowing up in northwest Pakistan\u2019s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, Shima Bibi<\/strong> watched her fellow girls drop out of school, while boys stayed in class.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat did not seem right,\u201d Bibi said. \u201cI was determined to make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

Encouraged by her teachers and family, she stayed in school, led her classes in grades, and ultimately became an international scholar.<\/p>\n

In 2017, Bibi was the first recipient of the Dean\u2019s Excellence Scholarship, which powered her vital discoveries in digestive health at the School of Food Science. Graduating last fall, she continues to pursue science in Pakistan, where she plans to make a difference for girls just like her.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

Making his father proud<\/h3>\n

\"William\u201cI learned to value the smallest of things,\u201d says William Navarro<\/strong>, current undergraduate recipient of the Dean\u2019s Excellence Scholarship. The junior in Animal Sciences and aspiring veterinarian grew up working in the apple orchards, farms, and feedlots of central Washington.<\/p>\n

\u201cWorking for a feed yard sparked my interest in animal wellness,\u201d Navarro said. \u201cBut I never thought I would leave town, let alone continue my education.\u201d<\/p>\n

When William was 11, his father, Guillermo, died.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was probably the toughest hardship I have ever endured,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I try to be the best I can in life. I want to do well in school, so my father can look down on me and say he\u2019s proud.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

Training future ag teachers<\/h3>\n

<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n

Excellence funding sent students Mariah Julson<\/strong>, Megan Blyzka<\/strong>, Reni Lucido<\/strong>, and Shania Simons<\/strong> to Wyoming last spring for the National Association of Agricultural Educators conference.<\/p>\n

There they learned how to find a mentor, manage their finances, supervise livestock projects, or run a lab and a mechanic\u2019s shop\u2014indispensable skills as they begin their careers.<\/p>\n

\u201cThanks to the funding, we were able to attend the entire conference and the students were really able to gain the full experience,\u201d said advisor Candis Carraway. \u201cThis was a great way to help them transition from being students to being agricultural educators.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
