Human Health
Our faculty examine the biological, psychological, and contextual factors related to development across the lifespan, from infancy through older adulthood. These interdisciplinary projects provide students with numerous opportunities to actively participate in cutting-edge research on topics with important implications for programs and policies aimed at promoting healthy cognitive, social-emotional, and physical development.
Animal Health
Our faculty work with state, federal, and private natural resource agencies to investigate the animals’ nutrition and their environmental quality. In our research, we study cattle, bears, bees, and salmon to ensure healthy and thriving populations in the future. We evaluate pesticides at ecologically relevant concentrations to determine impacts on the development, physiology, and behavior of wild animals.
Nutritious Food
Our multi-disciplinary team from WSU’s College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, College of Arts and Sciences, Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture, and the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is establishing WSU as a world leader in the broad field of human nutrition, with a focus on identifying connections between modern agricultural innovations, food production, and packaging, and health outcomes under “real-world” conditions in diverse global populations. Our research directly addresses the intersection between agriculture, human health, and the environment.
Organic Agriculture
Since organic research began in the 1970s, our program has grown to include over 25 acres of certified organic land, with an additional 100 acres leased for commercial production. Our faculty represent a broad cross-section of sustainable agriculture at WSU, focusing on understanding the unique production, processing, and marketing approaches used in organic and sustainable agriculture.
Aquatic Ecosystem Health
Our research faculty lead labs focused on the understanding of aquatic and riparian ecosystems around the world. Our highly collaborative and diverse research teams use observational, modeling, and experimental techniques to monitor and restore our watersheds.
Terrestrial Ecosystem Health
Our team of researchers works on questions related to ecosystem dynamics at local and global scales. Our research focuses on understanding the conservation, management, and biodiversity of our terrestrial ecosystems. We study the animals, insects, and plants in our forests, rangeland, and wetlands to provide data-informed decisions regarding species and landscape management.
