James Maguire epitomizes the concept of world-class faculty. His love for the students and pride in watching their accomplishments is supplemented by the creation of this fellowship within the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University. A job with the Bureau of Reclamation in Pasco sparked an interest and belief that seeds were critical to farming success. Jim graduated from WSU in 1952 with a degree in Agronomy, followed by a master’s at Iowa State and a doctorate at Oregon State. He began teaching courses at WSU in 1957, ranging from seed production and technology to processing and seed physiology. Jim Maguire retired from WSU in 2001 after 39 years as part of the crop and soils faculty. He passed away in August of 2004, but his legacy of passion and caring for WSU and its students will continue. In regards to the establishment of this fellowship, he says, “I see this fellowship as one vehicle for me to continue to be involved in student activities, including their research and their development in their occupations. As a native Washingtonian and a graduate of WSU, I am a proud Cougar and believe in supporting academic programs.”
Award Requirements
Distributions from this Fund shall be used to support travel and studies by WSU graduate students in seed technology to study seed technology on an international level. Seminars, conferences, symposiums and cooperative studies with seed scientists are examples of such uses.
