This endowment is established as a loving tribute to the memory of Arlene Heinemann. Edward and Arlene met at Washington State University when he was a senior studying Animal Science and she was a freshman studying Business Administration. Edward graduated in 1939 and they were married in 1941. Their successful marriage lasted nearly 60 years before Arlene’s death. They had two sons; Russell (WSU ’68), and Dale, a University of Puget Sound graduate. Edward was a in the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity at WSU and he worked his way through college waiting tables, making milk deliveries and shoveling coal, which made him appreciate the value of higher education. Edward’s service through activities such as being president of the Seattle Cougar Club, vice president of the Alumni Board and president of the Larriot Club, is deeply valued and reinforces his relationship to WSU. Edward helped establish of the Hilltop Stables in Pullman, he coordinated 4-H programs in Lincoln County as their County Extension agent, and he worked for Washington Horse Breeder’s Association for 28 years as field secretary and authored several educational articles. Finally, he was Director of the Washington Horse Racing Commission and served as a partner in a thoroughbred/Quarter horse sales business. With the knowledge that WSU is continually striving for academic excellence and to create the connection between student and university, Edward became a founding member of the Howard Hackedorn Scholarship, supporting the efforts of students in Animal Sciences. This endowment is just one more example of how the Washington State University experience can be amplified. This generous contribution will help students develop a lasting connection to the University and is deeply appreciated.
