The Hambelton family has been involved with WSU since 1946. Harold Hambelton enrolled in WSC (WSU) after serving in the Air Force. He received his degree in Horticulture in 1949. Upon graduation, Harold returned home and joined his father in his orchard operation. Harold and his wife Patricia have two sons, Michael and David, and five grandchildren. Michael, WSU 1971, married WSU undergrad Kathleen (Bogart). The couple lives in Wenatchee where they are in the fruit industry. They raised three sons: Jeffery, Scott (deceased), and Mark. David, WSU 1975, and his wife Marilyn (Huffstodt), WSU 1977, live in Everett, WA. David and his wife had two children; Teresa (graduated from WSU in 2002), and Alan. The Hambeltons have a vested interest in the tree fruit industry and WSU. In 1997, Scott B. Hambelton tragically died from meningitis, cutting short his pursuit of a degree in Horticulture and Business at WSU. Scott’s interest was in the business aspect of Tree Fruit Production. His family has decided to honor Scott’s memory by establishing a scholarship in his name in order to provide assistance to students with similar interests.
Award Requirements
Interest earning from this fund shall support one or more scholarships for a student or students committed to pursuing a career in the tree fruit industry of Washington State. Qualifications: Junior or senior level student with a 3.0 GPA; Majors may be, but not limited to: Horticulture, Agribusiness, Ag Economics, Entomology; Preference given to students who show an emphasis in production, warehousing and/or marketing; Financial need is not a priority. This scholarship may be renewable for a second year for at least $2,000 if the student maintains at least a 3.0 g.p.a. at WSU.
