Leonard and Edna Young obviously love Pullman and WSU because they lived here for 62 years and for most of those years in the same house on D Street where they have watched WSU grow and students come and go. Leonard grew up in Greeley, Colorado, and graduated from Colorado College with a degree in liberal arts in 1925. He got his master’s degree at the University of Northern Colorado in education in 1933. Edna grew up in Algonquin, Illinois, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in letters and science in 1924. They met in Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, where they were both teaching high school and were married in Edna’s family home in 1937. Their honeymoon was the drive from Illinois to Pullman, where Leonard had been working since January 1936 as the assistant to the dean in the College of Agriculture. He continued in that department and retired in June 1968 as Assistant to the Director of Ag Research. Edna worked in the Registrar’s Office from 1957-1965.Leonard and Edna quickly became immersed in the social, cultural and civic life of Pullman. They have been active alumni in the Pi Kappa Alpha and Alpha Phi Greek organizations. They have been loyal Cougar fans at hundreds of sporting events and other campus activities. Leonard is a 50-year member of Kiwanis.The Youngs have one daughter, Barbara (Young) Grutzmacher. She and their son-in-law Charles Grutzmacher live in Pullman. They have two grandchildren and one great granddaughter.
Award Requirements
The Leonard and Edna Young Endowed Scholarship Fund will be used to support students in agriculture. One fourth of the income shall be used for freshman scholarships, with the balance awarded to junior and senior students in agriculture, maintaining a 3.0 grade point average. Recipients must be U.S. citizens and have financial need.
