Dr. Roy L. Goss, a retired WSU turfgrass specialist, challenged the industry in 1988 to donate toward education and research by offering to match contributions. He retired in 1988 after 30 years of developing and conducting turfgrass research and extension programs in Puyallup, beginning in 1958. Many of these efforts are widely recognized and adopted at the national and international level. He was cited by the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America (GCSA) and the U.S. Golf Association as their 1988 Man of the Year for his contributions to golf course maintenance and development. He has received the GCSA Distinguished Service Award, the Pacific Seedsmen Association Man of the Year Award, and the O.A. Vogel Faculty Award from WSU. A holder of three degrees from WSU (BS Agriculture, B. of Education, PhD Agriculture), Dr. Goss established this fund in 1987. Believing that many others have benefited directly or indirectly from turfgrass research and extension, Roy Goss challenged others to make donations, which he would match. Roy and Marcella Goss strongly believe in supporting research and higher education and are, therefore, considered benefactors of WSU and CAHNRS.
Award Requirements
Awards of scholarship are to be used principally for support of programs directly related to increasing the fundamental knowledge and application of turfgrass science, culture, and management for the Pacific Northwest. Criteria: juniors or seniors who have a 2.7 GPA or above and majoring in turfgrass management at Washington State University; selection of students will be based on potential for future involvement and leadership in the turfgrass industry, academic achievement, department, university-wide, and off-campus activities.
