Back on the road

A group of seven people stands, holding shovels that are poised to dig into the ground. Two signs behind them read "USDA-ARS Plant Sciences Building, Washington State University Pullman, a partnership between the USDA Agricultural Research Service and Washington State University." The sign shows an artistic rendering of the building and the WSU and USDA logos.
USDA-ARS Pland Sciences Building Groundbreaking ceremony on the campus of Washington State University, Tuesday, August 1, 2023.

We had a few beautiful days in Pullman before the heat returned. No complaints though, as it will cool off soon enough.

Congratulations to Doug Walsh, who was recently inducted as a fellow of the Entomological Society of America. Congratulations, also, to Kristen Johnson, who was recently inducted as an American Society of Animal Science (ASAS) fellow. Kristen is also the incoming president for ASAS!

It has been a big year for Michelle Moyer, faculty in the Department of Viticulture and Enology. Michelle was recently named board president of the American Society for Enology and Viticulture. In addition, the Auction of Washington Wines, one of the top five charitable wine auctions in the U.S., has named Michelle as a 2023 Emerging Leader Award recipient. She will be among those recognized at the Auction of Washington Wines’ upcoming fundraising events, which benefit WSU viticulture and enology research.

It was a hectic weekend and early part of the week for many across CAHNRS and campus, as well as our USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) partners, as we prepared for the Tuesday groundbreaking of the new building. The ceremony was lovely. Next week is the official start of the 900-day construction period!

Travel has resumed. On Friday, the Mount Vernon Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Center (NWREC) hosts a tour as part of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit. This will be my first field day at Mount Vernon. Wednesday evening kicks off the APEC Summit with a Taste of Washington reception in Seattle. It’s a big deal for Washington to host the APEC Summit; we are excited that WSU and Mount Vernon NWREC are showcased as part of the event.

In between the APEC Summit events, I’ll have the opportunity to visit the WSU Long Beach Research and Extension Unit! I have heard many good things about one of our new faculty members, Laura Kraft, and our partnership with the cranberry industry. I haven’t been to as many counties as I would have hoped over the last year; time slips by quickly. I am excited to have a chance to learn more about our county-based programs by tagging along on the president’s regional visits whenever possible.

If you happen to be in Hulbert Hall, please stop by to see the Suite 421 makeover recognizing Gordon Davis and his family’s generosity and support of students. The makeover has been in the works for a while, with student recognition occurring back in the spring for the inaugural group of awardees.
